The Traditional Delaware Tint Exemption Process
If you prefer the traditional route, here's how the physician-certified process works:
Schedule an Appointment
Contact your primary care physician, dermatologist, or ophthalmologist at Christiana Care, Bayhealth, Beebe Healthcare, or another Delaware provider. Wait times can range from weeks to months.
Explain Tint Exemption Requirements
At your appointment, explain that you need a physician certification under Title 21, §4313 for a medical tint exemption. Many Delaware doctors are not familiar with the tint exemption process and may not know what documentation is required.
Doctor Creates Certification
If the doctor agrees, they create a written certification stating your medical condition, the medical necessity for darker tint, their Delaware medical license number, and their signature. There is no standardized state form — each physician creates their own documentation.
Keep Documentation in Vehicle
Once you have the physician’s certification, keep it in your vehicle at all times. Present it to DSP, Wilmington PD, Newark PD, or any local officer during traffic stops.
